People all around the world are buy single use plastics and it ends up in the ocean where animals like seabirds can consume the harmful plastics. What makes plastics so heavily used is that they have resistance to corrosion and chemicals, low electrical and thermal conductivity, resistance to shock, good durability, and do not break down in water. They are also so easily manufactured and so cheap. An article by the national geographic in 2015, revealed that there all sorts of plastics are found in 90% of seabirds. The population of seabirds has declined 67% from 1950-2010 and plastics have most certainly had a part to play in this. The largest population of birds consuming plastics is taking place in the South Pacific, Indian ocean, and the South Atlantic. It is believed that by 2050, every seabird will be consuming plastics. “Global plastic production doubles every 11 years,”(Chris Wilcox a research scientist with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization).“So in the next 11 years, we’ll make as much plastic as we’ve made since plastic was invented. Seabirds’ ingestion of plastic is tracking with that”(Wilcox). Albatross birds are more prone to eating plastic because they fish by skimming their beaks across the top of the water, and take in plastics floating on the surface. Petrels and shearwaters birds, which live on offshore islands on the sea, also contain large amounts of plastic in their stomachs.
