Let's Save Roblox: Cutting Down on Age Restrictions
Hello, the developers and maintainers of Roblox. We present to you, a petition, that we believe will reconcile the characteristic Robloxian openness and still maintain the image of a safe, child-friendly Roblox, and the legal pressure to ‘protect children'.
We appreciate the grave problem of child predators (ie, paedophiles) had plagued Roblox’s reputation as a child-friendly place. And that many people are berating and staining your name further, sometimes to a point of absurdity, painting Roblox as a swamp infested with sex predators round every corner, which is a falsehood, but the threat remains.
But, recent measures to prevent more children falling prey has been nothing short of Orwellian for many communities across Roblox large and small. Though whatever benevolence you have intended for us will have its effects, alas both good and bad, we still need to consider the survival of the game itself after your safety measures. Roblox houses millions of active games, and each game is a piece of art, a machine, that had been shaped and streamlined for years and years by both artist and consumer. Great artistic value will be lost with every game abandoned, which this current policy currently accelerates. Roblox, is a cultural center of immense value. It will be like burning down the Library of Alexandria.
Roblox is inclusive, it is open, and so much can be experienced, or rather, one day we'll say it used to be.
The superfluous number of age brackets (six: three of which are less than three years interval) will only allow for a very few number of people in a game server, especially in less crowded games, to communicate with each other, which will be disastrous in:
Tactical shooters, military simulators, cooperative obbies, open-world games, horror games, some tycoon games, effectively all RP games, all trading games, all Among-Us style games.
And thereby lead to the breakdown of the possibly thousands of games and their communities, and a huge dent in Roblox's player count and inclusiveness. It includes, but not limited to:
Blood Debt (27.7 million visits; 81,000 votes for likes and dislikes)
Flicker (647,000 votes; 836 million visits)
Brookhaven ( 75 billion visits; 8.5 million votes)
Life Together (760,000 votes, 2.7 billion visits)
Tradelands (52 million visits; 120,000 votes)
Multi-Crew Tank Simulator ( 3.4 billion visits; 3.4 million votes)
Break In Story (2.9 billion visits; 1.2 million votes)
Dead Rails (3.4 million votes; 5.8 billion visits)
The Mimic (1.2 million votes; 1.1 billion visits)
...
From this list alone, there is a lot of upset players .
And the whole feature of age brackets in in-experience chats will do the greatest harm to Roblox's most popular games such as Brookhaven, as there're so few that can be communicated, and also alienate many of the teenage players with narrow age brackets. Also, the livelihoods of many developers and children, and completely wipe out arguably Roblox's most populated sector of RP games. The game safe for children, what good does it do, if it cannot attract them!
Lastly, the whole idea of people being able to play with each other yet cannot carry out the activities of an experience, is outrageously stupid and destructive.
Therefore, as a more refined, but easy solutions to Roblox's new safety policy, we, the developers, players and lovers of the game, request that:
• Allow developers to implement limited callouts for communication especially for milsims, crewed vehicle combat, trading, and Among-Us style games, and so forth where it is neccesary for gameplay
- To allow parents, after passing age and ID verification, to disable the chat restrictions, thus explicitly transferring the legal responsibility to them instead of Roblox
• To reform the age bracket system so that all children can chat with children, all teenagers with teenagers, and all adults with adults
Thank you to all the signatories. And thank you to Roblox, and its founders for simply creating such a great gaming experience for over 19 years, regardless of the future, you had once made history and memories, and we sincerely hope that you continue to do so.
