Would you like to enjoy our outdoor space at The Theatre Centre?
To date, we have been unable to open our Green Roof/Terrace to the community due to some technical zoning regulations. In preparation for our Committee of Adjustment hearing on May 27, 2015 we need to show that we have our community’s support for a change in designation for this outdoor space, from ‘terrace’ to ‘patio'.

To the Toronto City Council and the Committee of Adjustment:
The Theatre Centre and supporting community are seeking a change in designation for The Theatre Centre’s Green Roof/Terrace at our Committee of Adjustment hearing on May 27, 2015. We are seeking minor variances to the current zoning regulations to change this area’s designation from ‘terrace’ to ‘patio’. We understand that by-laws 438-86 Section 12(2)345(e)(i) & (ii), state that patios should be at the front of the building and the proposed patio is located at the rear of the building facing the rear lot line.
This outdoor area presents a tremendous opportunity to share our own small green space. It is a place for plants to live, for quiet reflection, and to extend the artistic practice that takes place inside the building.
For over 25 years The Theatre Centre has been an anchoring cultural institution in the West Queen West neighbourhood. We have asked our community to demonstrate their support of this change in designation by signing this online petition.

This "patio" faces a park and a dense commercial / residential area and alley. There is no physical reason why the minor variance should not be granted.
They are good neighbours. I love across the street from The Theatre Centre and support more green in this condo clump and I know they will be respectful of their neighbours.
As a local resident, I welcome a community patio space that belongs to such an important contributor to my neighbourhood and the arts community at large. This is not just another bar patio on the Queen West strip... This is essential and beautiful community space.
as a music composer and sound designer who works so much in theatre, this space would be a simply wonderful space to meet with colleagues, hang out and get to meet new artists. This would be immense to our community, the neighbourhood and everyone else.
Dear Theatre Centre, I am making you a promise: when this green roof opens, I will make a donation of native flowers to bring bees and butterflies to you and your artists. A token of thanks for all the creative work in the city that the Theatre Centre has pollinated!

We need more spaces in Toronto for communities to gather. The Theatre Centre is one of them. Please allow the designation of their outdoor space to be changed from "terrace" to "patio".
