The Priority Schools "Plan" is an inadequate strong-arm attempt to further the corporatization of public education when and where the public has legitimately said cease and desist to the last decade of "school reform." Reform that, over the last twenty years, has proven to be the driver of re-segregation. Yes, "Education reform" as our governor during his terms and his department have envisioned and enacted have served to only further destabilize schools and the children served therein. This "plan" or "designation" is nothing more than the final lever pull to force charterization upon the residents of Wilmington. Absent a vote of the people, this boondoggle should not go forward. The community should drive the plan, not the governor.

"The time frame provided is insufficient for districts and the schools’ communities to develop thoughtful, serious plans for improvement." These schools have been failing the majority of our students for years, decades in many cases. Is the development of "thoughtful, serious plans for improvement" just beginning??? How many more students have to suffer and drop out?? And for how much longer do you propose??? What would be a sufficient time frame? When the data, evidence, children, families and the state, even the schools themselves all say that these public schools are clearly not working, how is doing something different a "threat"? I understand how it threatens adults - the jobs of administrators and educators in these schools. I mean no on wants to lose their job. But thousands of children who are matriculating through these schools will never make it to meaningful employment if they don't get what they need NOW!
Why don't we start putting the holistic needs of children first for a change... City children could care less about "losing public schools". What we need are GOOD schools. Schools that inspire children to learn through creative and experiential learning; schools that truly engage family and community; schools that prioritize not only a highly qualified staff but uniquely qualified educators who can actually CONNECT with the students they serve.
How are charter schools (which ARE public schools) and school privatization a threat and to whom??? In business, we call other ways to effectively meet a goal that we've been failing miserably at an "opportunity". If these public schools were operated as businesses and valued students and their families as "customers", they would have "gone out of business" years ago!
Enough is enough. From DOE on down, everyone is casting blame. I've been in this fight to try to improve public education from a parent and community stand point since my son was a first grader at Warner Elementary School. Nearly every

I hope every individual who reads and signs this petition will also send an email and hard-mail to Governor Markell and demand that he stop disparaging educational professionals and concentrate on doing what's necessary to raise these inner city children up from their desperate poverty ridden lives. He and his DOE owe at least that to the Delaware system of public education and the knowledgeable education professionals who currently care more and sacrifice more than any of his appointed minions.
