This song is a part of our heritage and history. People try to link this song to racism because the confederate used it during the war, but the song itself was written in New York by a black man who was born in Ohio. Learn your history and stop being so thin skinned.

I was born here! I still live here!!!! I am ARAB ALUMNI and I am the most PROUD to be an ARAB HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND ALUMNI! I marched under & STILL TAKE ADVICE from WAYNE WASHAM, John Mullins! The band has always only played the first 2-3 lines of the song over & over!!!!!!! There is not one WORD in those lines about SLAVERY!!!! NOT ONE!!!!!! All you are doing by taking away "Dixie" is making us LOOK LIKE WE ARE RACIST! You should have left this MATTER ALONE!!!!!!!! If WAYNE WASHAM thought the song was ok to play & REPRESENT ARAB.........ENOUGH SAID!!!!!!!

Tradition is tradition regardless of changes. This song hold a special place in this town and shouldn’t be taken down because it could be considered “offensive” to some. Instead of trying to please a few, we should be educating the many on the history and meaning of the song. Arab City School’s motto is to “Stive for Excellence” so why don’t we strive to pave a way of understanding and knowledge not one of fear of being traditional. Change is important but tradition reminds us of our values and that is needed for excellence.

This song brings the feeling of victory, success, and school pride when played at the games. No one thinks about the Confederacy or racism when hearing Dixie. The song isn't outdated, the victimization mentality is.

As a former student and band member of AHS, the claim that this is song is non inclusive or racist is absurd. That may have been during the time when it was written, but that couldn’t be more false in this era. As a former student who has performed this song, as well as been a by stander at football games, I can tell you that this song means so much more than the out dated lyrics, which aren’t even sung when this tune is played. This is the school fight song. It brings forth feelings of victory and pride in both players and spectators in the crowd, not of “slavery” or “racism” but of our team’s good performance. To take this away from the majority who love and cherish it, based on the outdated, selfish view of the minority is a greater offense than the perceived, nonexistent one. Especially considering this decision was based on the opinion of very few, without consultation of the vast majority, including the very students who actively participate in its playing. It is a shame that our school’s leaders have come to this form of decision making.
