Walking at graduation to get your diploma is symbolic of all the academic and social effort he has put forth since he was in kindergarten. Whatever Max did, it shouldn't override all the nonsensical work he had to do in school the past 12 years. All that work was done looking forward to the milestone day of walking at graduation. It seems the principal needs to step outside the confines of the by-the-book disciplinarian and put themselves in Max's shoes to see the bigger picture.
