Let Whitman Students Vote
Currently, Whitman elects delegates to vote on school issues. However, we believe that the student body should be able to vote on issues that affect them directly (such as canceling school events, or accepting amendments to Whitman’s constitution. Therefore, we are proposing an amendment to the Whitman constitution that would read as follows:
“If any measure brought to a vote in the SGA would affect a majority of the student body, then on the first Tuesday of the month after the vote is passed, all such measures will be put to a student population vote. If over 50% of the student body votes in favor of the measure, it goes into effect.
The following types of measures count as “affecting the student body”:
*Canceling school events or classes or programs
*Amending the Whitman Constitution
*Changing school rules or policies
*Any measure deemed “affecting the student body” by a majority vote of the SGA delegates
The following types of measures do not count as “affecting the student body”:
*Budget measures, Club funding, etc.
*Creating new events or programs or classes
This amendment will go into effect after 3 months.”
