Hi Hawaiian Swimming athletes!

The LSC has changed the limit of event entries at Age Group States from 8 to 6 in order to: 1) make the meet shorter, 2) let more swimmers attend States (because 8 events means they will have to lower the time standards even though the trend over the last few years is that we are all getting faster due to the motivation of making the faster cuts), and 3) allow us to "focus" more on our swims. One con of this change is it limits the number of opportunities we have to swim fast, and the point of having prelim/final meets is to have as many opportunities as we can. As your Athlete reps, we would like to get a sense of your opinion on this matter. If you would like to change the number of possible State entries back to 8, please sign this petition. Your voice really matters to the future of Hawaiian Swimming.

Mahalo nui loa!

I have been hearing from so many of you about how this limit keeps you from qualifying for future goals and hitting your potential. We are currently compiling all your feedback to prepare a formal presentation for the next LSC meeting so they see the impact on our training.

Seeing this level of backing from our fellow athletes proves that we all feel the exact same frustration about these new limits. This momentum shows that our community wants to push for our own performance goals instead of having them capped by others.

I have 11 year old who will qualify for over 8 events and would love to race as many as possible as 6 makes for hard decisions plus more events will make meet more fullfilling, especially with cost of travel.

How is lowering the standards a good thing? Should we just give everyone a participation trophy while we're at it?? My swimmers work their tails off all season to lower their times, and qualifying for states is the brass ring. It means something, because it is so hard. The amount of time, finances, and resources to travel for the state meets is significant. The boys want to swim as many events as possible. Help me understand why we'd want to stop the trend of MOTIVATED swimmers making faster cuts. To state that our swimmers can "focus" more if they have less events to swim is condescending & dismissive. Mahalo for asking our opinion and drafting this petition! Aloha.

Keep it at 8 and keep the time standards high. My athletes spend hours and hours every week in the pool, and also focus on cross training and eating well, all with the goal of making competitive state cut times. Changing the cut times to make it less competitive is not how the world works, and will not prepare our athletes to compete against mainland athletes when it comes to college scholarships. Making it to the state level *should* be challenging and hard to attain. Ms. Morton below had some very good points as well. Mahalo for listening.

Does the LSC understand that if they slow down the time standards to INCREASE the amount of swimmers who can participate, the meet will not be any shorter? Either option produces the same meet length. The swimmers and coaches should be able to decide what is best for their athletes, not the LSC.

I agree with going back to 8 events. For some swimmers who qualify for all distances in all strokes, it is already hard to choose which ones to scratch. We work really hard all year and Hawaii needs to continue to keep competitive standards.

8 gives everyone who has more than 6 an option anyway. If it's too tiring or want to focus on certain events then just don't sign up for that many.
