My education is in exercise science, sports studies, and youth development. Based on science, high school is a critical time for kids to develop social bonds and physical fitness habits that translate into happy, healthy kids and later happy, healthy adults. Structured sports and other school activities are a crucial part of that process. These activities become even more important for low income and at-risk kids which represent a high percentage of kids within the Des Moines Public School System. Many kids within Des Moines Public Schools are already facing barriers that most students in the suburbs do not. Taking away sports and other extra curricular activities while area schools are allowed to participate, increases these inequities and widens the gap between Des Moines Public Schools and suburban schools. For many Des Moines Public School students, their sports team, band, or choir is their family and lifeline that keeps them on track academically and away from negative influences. The benefits of allowing kids to participate in sports and other school activities far outweigh the risks. Please allow our kids to compete. For some, it could literally save their life.

The IED should have never allowed spring/summer sports if school was Online only in the spring after spring break. Why should fall sports be treated any differently???

Sports are not the same as being in a classroom. Strategies can be used to protect kids while they cannot be done safely in a 600 sq ft classroom. Let the kids play

Our at risk students are being placed in even greater risk. The inability to participant in extra curricular activities eliminates the one thing the motivates many of them to not only excel at school, but in our community. I learned this as a Rider Club football coach for 5 years. Many of my athletes from troubled homes were allowed to experience the love and support they lacked at home from their football family. This love and support, combined with a strong desire to participate, allowed me to keep them positively engaged in school and their community. Without involvement in extra curricular activities I can also tell you as a criminal defense attorney that these young people will turn to negative influences just so that they can have a feeling of family, albeit a very counter productive one.

Allow extracurricular activities for Des Moines students! Participation in these activities should be allowed regardless of the school's online learning status!
