The school administration reversed their decision and confirmed that Katie will deliver her Valedictorian speech. I have already confirmed the speaking order with the graduation coordinator to ensure there are no further changes. We will be watching the ceremony closely to verify that the agreement is honored in full.

KATIE BYNUM was involved in an incident outside the Millbrook Prom last Friday, May 11th. Everyone involved got different levels of punishment with Katie's being the harshest. Wakefield High School is not allowing her to give her Valedictorian speech at graduation as part of her punishment because they say they are embarrassed to have her represent the school. Nothing could be farther from the truth. We do not think this is fair and we think Katie should be allowed to give her speech. She is a kind, sweet girl with the biggest heart! She always helps anyone who needs it. We are proud and honored to have her as our Valedictorian! A poor choice should not outweigh the years of hard work and dedication or her strong character. Let Katie speak!!! Please sign our petition. Thanks!

I got in trouble with the same thing she did not too long ago. That mistake didn’t define me and we can’t let Katie’s define her. Everyone makes dumb decisions. Doesn’t make us any less of a person than we were before. I’m rooting for you Katie!

As katies sister I can assure you that Katie is an all-around amazing person. I also know how important this is speech is to her and she should be able to get the recognition that she worked so hard for and that she deserves.

Katie is an amazing person, but that is beside the point. The point is that being valedictorian is the result of four years of extremely hard work. One night should not/can not discredit those four years. Katie deserves to speak!

I am a teacher at Wakefield. Katie is a remarkable young lady. I am ashamed that our Principal would not allow Katie speak at graduation. As a community & school we should come together to support this extraordinary student. One night should not affect the example she has set for Four years. Shame on those who are not on Katie’s side.

Katie’s 4 Years is hard work out weighs a single night of one mistake. Katie is the most kind and dedicated person I know and she deserves to speak in front of her peers and family on graduation. It is sad and disappointing that she is being limited that opportunity for something that did not happen on wakefield school grounds nor Millbrooks, but a north ridge a PRIVATE area.

Katie is the most amazing and hardworking person I know. She has earned everything she has with hard work and dedication, and those accomplishments SHOULD NOT be stripped away, especially since there are others who were caught in the same incident and STILL HAVE THEIR PRIVILEDGES!!! Katie deserves to speak.

Anonymous, your words represent EVERYTHING THAT IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD TODAY!! Go to church or read a book. Do anything that will broaden your mind, heart and soul. You are an angry person and I’m sorry if life has dealt you a bad hand. That said, don’t hate on people who work hard to be a success and stop making things up. Cheating? Why don’t you ask the administration what Katie’s SAT and ACT scores are. She didn’t need to cheat.

This is Richard Bynum. I’m Katie Bynum’s dad. Katie’s family is extremely grateful for all the support that Katie has received and all the people signing this petition on her behalf. It means the world to us to know that Katie is so loved and admired. We love and admire her too. At this time, however, we would like to kindly request that this petition be taken down. We will continue to work with Katie, partnering with her school, to help her learn and grow from this experience. We support her school administration’s discipline of Katie and view this to be an important part of her learning process. Any discussions about the extent of her discipline we prefer to remain private, as we do not want in any way to distract from the upcoming graduation season. This is a time when our community should unite to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of all Wake County graduates. Katie’s family congratulates all seniors for reaching this milestone accomplishment and wish you all the very best in the future.
