For years now, Glades Middle School students have been receiving two parts and two days for their mathematics midterm exams. But this year, 2014-2015, the school decided to change their system. This affected several students. They were all given 45 min to complete 20 to 35 difficult mathematics problems, ones that they would have received much more time before. Usually, the students were given about 25 questions per day, and an entire period to do each set of 25. This meant the midterm lasted on average about two days, giving the students much more time to complete their work. But recently, they have decided to change this, without notice or preparation. For Algebra One students, this meant they were to spend about 2 minutes per problem, and for the Geometry it meant students were to spend about 1 minute per problem. Due to the lack of time given, student's grades have gone down. They have gotten poor grades for their semester exams, which means their chances of getting into magnet programs and applying for scholarships into private schools will be less. We are asking for a fairer, more reasonable test, one that will let us as students be able to succeed. Because that, is what the education system should be about.
