Our family has begun the process of starting a program to read to shelter dogs in Walker County, GA. As we had only spoken with the shelter directly about implementing the program, we were hit with a huge snag in the plan. Children are not allowed to be volunteers. We were told to bring the matter to the attention of the County Commissioner, Shannon Whitfield. As our attempts to reach out have not been reciprocated, we would like to gather support to show that this is a wonderful opportunity to enrich the lives of both the animals and children.

We understand the legal issues that come with allowing children to be in the presence of unfamiliar animals, but would like to be able to work towards a system and screening process that could really make this a thriving, loving, and safe program for everyone. We feel that if there is enough documented support, we could get a long way with making this work.
