Brennan Caruthers, of La Costa Canyon High School, has been working his ass off for the last 10 months to get good at debate this year. His hard work paid off. He was co-champion of the Cal Round Robin, and earned his school's first ever TOC bid in LD. He was recently rewarded for his efforts with an at-large to the TOC. Despite this, the TOC is still "unsure" if they are going to let him compete. Brennan's school administration will only let him compete as an independent entry, because his head coach is not okay with him competing under the school name. His coach placed strict travel restrictions that made it difficult for students to compete nationally. When Brennan circumvented these restrictions by competing independently, he was told he couldn't debate anymore for La Costa Canyon High School. The TOC is now claiming that they will not likely allow Brennan to compete independently. Brennan is one of the hardest working students in debate and it would be an absolute travesty if his career was ended as a result of stupid rule technicalities and a mean-spirited coach.
