The NYS Department of Health and Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that high risk winter sports (basketball and hockey) could resume February 1, 2021. Local health departments had to give the ok. The Albany County Health Commissioner ruled against resuming winter sports.
Last season was cut short and this season never happened. Athletes that are juniors and seniors will be left out of college recruiting. Student athletes from bordering states that are allowed to play will get scholarships in place of NY athletes. This decision negatively impacts the futures, both academically and economically, of NY high school athletes. Kids want to be with their friends and teammates. Kids have done everything they were asked to reduce the spread, bend the curve and keep hospital capacity available. It's time to move forward safely.
While we all understand there are risks with Covid-19, schools have proven they know how to manage those risks.

Use science and statistics. There is no evidence that CoVid is spread in this demographic or by playing sports. Travel sports have been played since last June with no spread of disease. Right now we are sending the message that you can play sports but only if you can afford a travel team. Let. Them. Play.
