This is an absurd decision which indicates Immigration did not do even basic research in considering this application. The filmmaker won two awards at Sundance, which is one of the major film festivals in the world, highly competitive even to get into, let alone to win awards at. This achievement alone shows that Ghaemmaghami is an exceptional talent. Furthermore, any research into filmmaking reveals that most documentary filmmakers make very little money from their craft despite the effort and time that it takes. DocEdge has been running for over a decade, and many politicians have attended the openings from all sides of the aisle.

This is not right. An embarrassment, yes, but also shameful.

This is so embarrassing!! She's an international film-maker and has better things to do than over-stay in New Zealand...!!

Goes without saying. She should be allowed to visit. Especially as she is here to support the cultural enlightenment of our country.

I am a researcher on the NZ film industry. This visit with master classes will help build capacity in our industry. She is a globally acclaimed film-maker on a global tour. Why would she want to stay in New Zealand? This mistake is an embarrassment to New Zealand.

Ghaemmaghami's visit to New Zealand is part of a world tour travelling to promote and speak about Sonita, which also includes stops at Spain, Australia, New York, Turkey and Serbia. Her film Sonita gives a valuable insight into the lives of young Afghan girls and arranged marriages. She is a much sought after international speaker for her work on human rights and social issues.

This is too dumb to even debate. Immigration needs to accept they've made a mistake and reverse their decision.
