Please help our kids claim back their afternoons and get adequate sleep. I need your support to petition MMS to offer more classwork and less homework. 20 math problems won't help any more that 5. Reading whole chapters on your own and summarizing and analyzing won't help them remember it more than learning about it in the classroom. I had enough of my child's face in a book every afternoon and not to mention weekends and holidays for 2 to 3 hours if not more. I hope you are brave enough to help our kids be kids. Thanks!

AMEN! My daughter experienced all of this as she went through MMS. It is also continuing. In order to be a well rounded teen you need to have some free time to volunteer in the community, participate in church activities, have down time, family time, and exercise or participate in a hobby. It is very difficult to maintain the homework pace that is expected of these kids and also be well rounded. There is no sound research that proves homework is necessary to this degree. I encourage you to read The Race to Nowhere.
As a former 5th grade teacher I agree...it's getting too much and also starting too young as well
My kids do their homework from the time they get home until they go to bed.... too late. I understand the need to reinforce what they have learned with some homework but please when they come home let them be kids.
Hard for children to be well rounded when they spend 4-5 hrs on homework.

I've had to tell my 11 YO son several times already this year (6th grade at MMS) that he "no, you can't go outside and play with friends, you have too much homework". Really?? When can my kid be a kid? Is childhood over at 11? I wish I'd known so he could have enjoyed being 10.
