I am beginning this petition solely on the idea that Correctional Officers should be included on the LEOSA Act (a.k.a. H.R. 218). We as Correctional Officers deal with very violent criminals on a day to day basis. Dealing with these criminals often puts us at risk in the line of duty. Nearly all of these violent offenders will one day be released back into the communities and could quite possibly become a neighbor. As a Correctional Officer we receive threats of physical harm to ourselves and our families nearly every day. With the recent attacks on Law Enforcement it is obvious that we need to protect ourselves as well. Not being included into the LEOSA Act makes it that much more difficult ultimate for us to properly defend ourselves and our loved ones. Recently LEOSA was amended to include active duty and retired Militaty Police Officers. If we can amend H.R. 218 to include Military Police who see no viable threat every day of their career, as Correctional Officers do, there should be no question as to whether or not we as Correctional Officers should be able to protect ourselves off duty under the same law. I am asking that Congress make an Amendment to H.R. 218 to include all Correctional Officers. Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for your continued support.
