Marijuana is the common name for the drug made from the plant Cannabis sativa which contains a mind altering ingredient known as tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC. It is a natural plant that can be grown from seeds unlike cigarettes which are poisonous to the human body and are legal. Marijuana became illegal in 1937 not through scientific, medical, and government hearings, but through racism, fear, yellow journalism, corrupt legislators, and to protect corporate profits. The Cannabis sativa plant, also known as hemp, has many commercial uses including clothing, rope, plastics, fuel, and paper. It also has many medical benefits which include alleviation of nausea and vomiting, it stimulates hunger in chemotherapy patients, eliminates eye pressure in glaucoma patients, and many more. Legalization will not only save the state and federal governments billions of dollars a year for criminalizing marijuana users, but will generate billions of dollars in tax revenue. It would free up our jails and prisons for people who should be there instead of nonviolent drug offenders. People should have the right to chose what they want to do with their lives. Alcohol and tobacco products are legal, which have little to no benefits to humans and are associated with numerous health, medical, and safety issues. With this petition, I am asking for your support and signatures to help strengthen the argument for the legalization of marijuana. The government realized that prohibition on alcohol did not work, so it's time they realize prohibition on marijuana doesn't work either.
