For over a generation lecturers at Leeds Metropolitan University have built up a breadth of foreign language provision that is unparalleled outside of London. As a result of government funding cuts the university proposes to cease the teaching of Farsi, Turkish, Finnish and Hungarian and reduce its provision in Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Greek, Polish and Portuguese. If this cut is implemented then 11 lecturers will lose their jobs and lives will be shattered and a highly regarded provision will be lost to both the wider community and to trade and industry.
We the undersigned call on the university to withdraw these proposals:
I have been reading through the comments you all left and I am truly moved by the depth of expertise and passion for these languages. This is entirely your movement and I am just doing my best to keep up with the momentum you created.

This is rediculous. Leeds Met is supposed to be a university not a business that just cuts everything that doesnt make a quick buck.

So sad to hear this. Those lecturers are amazing and deserve better than this.

University management have no idea what they are doing. Cutting these courses is short sighted and hurts the local community.

My daughter takes classes here and loves it. Why get rid of language programs that actually make the uni stand out from the rest?
