The Utah State Prison has been at it's Draper location since the 1950's. While some of the buildings need to be renovated or replaced, there is more than enough land available to do so, with room to spare for future buildings as well. Developers have decided, however, that the current location is prime real estate and they want to cash in by having the prison moved. They have been working with law makers to see that this happens. Unfortunately, the alternate locations that have been proposed are not remote...they are surrounded by growing neighborhoods and communities close to schools, playgrounds, homes, and businesses.We petition that the prison be improved where it stands. Of all the criteria set forth for the new location, the only site that meets nearly every requirement is its current location. This would save the state of Utah millions of taxpayer dollars as well.
