Lean Forward, My Ass: Free Keith!
Keith Olbermann, MSNBC's brightest star, has been suspended today after MSNBC President Phil Griffin discovered he had made undisclosed contributions to political campaigns. NBC policy forbids its news personalities from making such contributions, and so Olbermann, who violated this policy, was silenced.
This is just another example of how no matter how much MSNBC tries to paint itself as progressive, it can't help but lurch to the right.
A corporation has a right to enforce its policies, a person has a right to free expression. If corporations are allowed to donate endless barrels of money to political organizations, then why on Earth is a citizen not allowed to donate legally to a cause he supports? However, this is NOT a freedom of speech issue. This is a fairness and accountability issue.
If MSNBC is going to suspend without pay its brightest star, that is its prerogative. However, it needs to look into contributions made by all other personalities-including, and especially, Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan. If it does not comply, MSNBC must reinstate Keith Olbermann to his television show.
Support Keith and hold MSNBC accountable by contacting Phil Griffin today and by joining the boycott of all MSNBC and NBC programs until either Keith is brought back or Griffin suspends every other MSNBC and NBC news personality who has made political contributions.
