These women deserve the recognition they didn’t get when it could have made a world of difference. Their do-it-yourself attitude is the epitome of the American spirt.

These women, led by Sybil Stockdale should be honored and no better place than Coronado.

Many of us knew these amazing women during the Vietnam era. They walked among us; they were our friends; their children went to school with our children. Their dignity, courage and strength were the stuff of local legend; we admired them beyond words. And now, with The League of Wives Memorial, we have an opportunity to tell their story and keep it alive for future generations, as part of Coronado's rich history.

I'm just now in the middle of reading "League of Wives" and it strikes me that all this was going on right here in Coronado when I was in high school and I don't remember any conversations about it. It's sad to think history was taking place right across town from me and I had no idea. I believe , today, our high school students are much better informed or they pay more attention to their community.

Living only a few homes from the Stockdales, I enjoyed the pleasure of stopping by, chatting with Admiral Stockdale and later quietly sitting with Sybil on her front porch and listening to her stories. I can’t think of a more fitting memorial than a Coronado League of Wives statue honoring these extraordinary women. It would be an important & significant addition to Coronado Public Art.

These remarkable women started the POW/MIA movement from Coronado, fighting a fractured and complacent bureaucracy, bravely gathering valuable intelligence by exchanging encoded letters with their husbands, and banding together to fight for humane treatment and the eventual release of POWs in North Vietnam. They bucked the system by calling attention to the plight of the POWs when the government was trying to bury the story for fear of undermining public support for the war. They deserve a lasting memorial.

Pat Mearns is my grandma, and someone who has done invaluable work. I pray this memorial gets approved so that the important history that they loved is never forgotten.

Having grown up in Coronado in the 50's and 60's and knowing who these families were/are makes me proud of them. Those were not easy times for any of us. I offer a BIG thank you to these women.

This statue will honor women who fought to bring their husbands home from war. It’s the perfect statue for Cironado.
