We were delighted to read recently that our local Council confirmed that the construction of a new secondary school for Dundee's catholic community would go ahead. This school will be formed by a merger between Lawside Academy and St. Saviours HS. Our joy however was short lived when we discovered that it was to be named St. Paul's RC Academy and the name Lawside RC Academy would disappear! We cannot imagine other notable educational institutions such as Morgan, Harris or Grove Academies being part of a similar plan. The outcry from former pupils would simply not allow this scenario to develop. These schools have contributed to the effective learning of thousands of Dundonians and are part and parcel of our rich history and culture in this fine city. These names for those who attended, taught or sent their children to, are sacred identities. We are all rightly proud of the remarkable achievements of these centres of excellence where many young people have been given an opportunity to develop and flourish. Preliminary investigations suggest that the consultation exercise for naming the new school was seriously flawed. Simply not enough stakeholders were involved in the swift decision making process. We are confident that given more time to reflect on this issue, the catholic authorities can and must review the proposed name of the new establishment. In normal circumstances we do understand that during a school merger a brand new identity is desirable and usually the correct procedure but this really is a special case. We certainly do not wish to offend those connected with St. Saviours HS as that truly comprehensive establishment has served the community of North East Dundee very well for three decades but there is no comparison with the tradition, size and influential role that Lawside has played over the last century within not only Dundee but Angus, Perthshire and North East Fife. We believe there are many more who hold the opinion that a review is required and we call on as many Lawsiders as possible to register their concerns by signing this online petition and if there is sufficient support a rally will be organised and a steering group elected to campaign to Keep the Name - Lawside RC Academy.
