I well remember the sleep deprivation of high school. Major contributor to some major unhappiness in my life. I hope we can spare our kids that experience.

I think there is a typo in your petition. Don't you mean no "no earlier than 8:30"?

I'm a college professor and very few students choose to take 8 am classes and even many of those that do have trouble with focus. I can't imagine what it is like teaching a room full of students who have no choice but to be there before they are awake. If education is our primary goal then the current schedule makes no sense. All our students are being forced into sub optimal and unhealthy learning conditions to accommodate the non-educational choices of a much smaller group.

I was not an early riser in school and struggled constantly with an early start time.

This bill could improve the quality of life & educational experience of so many Maine teens. Our kids' doctors and mental health providers are strongly urging middle schools & high schools to move start times but we are at the mercy of our school board & administrators to decide if this can be done. I think the only question they should need to answer is "how" to make the change.

Legislation is needed to insure entrenched school districts have needed healthy hours parameters.

It is time to make the health and safety of our teens a priority. Later start times means more sleep and improved academic (and athletic) performance, while decreasing depression, drug use, and car accidents.
