Safer by far for the rider and reduces traffic congestion. The ridiculous part is no helmet required in the state but lane filtering allowed.

I was nearly in an accident that could have been completely prevented if I wasn't forced to sit behind a car at a stoplight where inattentive drivers come flying up behind and don't see us bikers

Have been sitting at a red light only to hear brakes locking up to stop at a red light. A car can take this kind of hit, a bike cannot. If bikes could split between lanes at traffic lights would get rid of this problem, as well as helping with congestion.
