Dear Dorothy Newman c/o Rendall & Rittner, Your letter, dated 15 Feb 2012, states that the tariff (price per unit) for heating and cooling has been raised from 4.6p to 6.45p, or 40% in the last 6 months. Your letter further explains that the increase "is to cover an increase in gas prices and more accurately reflects the gas usage in providing the heating and hot water to the development". We can accept that gas prices may have increased, but can not see how you can justify an increase of 40%, (gas prices are regulated and capped in the UK, so 40% seems incredible in 6 months). The second reason that you state also appears to be on shaky ground as gas usage reflects what is on actual units on meters, which has nothing to do with unit tariff - if we use more gas, why should that lead to an increase in gas price? Please explain!? We believe that it is totally unacceptable that the gas/unit tariff can be increased at your discretion by such a significant amount to cover whatever costs you might wish to, without fact or justification. It appears, that you have failed to provide a sound reason for the substantial increase in tariff and are attempting to pass on unnamed/unreasonable costs onto residents. We urge you to provide the residents of the Landmark with the full reasoning behind a 40% increase in price, and all the detail behind this. If necessary, a third party may need to be brought in, to protect residents' legal rights. We would like to avoid this situation, but feel drastic tariff increases without full and proper justification could lead to such action. Many thanks.
