Do NOT change the name of the school. Lee was a great man before, during and after the war. He was a Virginian first and foremost. This is WASTEFUL of taxpayer's money and part of our American history.

I ask you to consider the reason for changing the name of the school. Is it based on accurate history or what could be called " politically correct history" that is causing so much divisiveness to our country today. While the communist had power in the USSR they try undo history by renaming cities such as Leningrad from St. Petersburg; and we all know how that turned out. Whatever your feelings on some matters in his life, let us not forget that Robert E Lee was also an educator, as Superintendent Of the US Military Academy at West Point and later as President of Washington College ( now known as Washington and Lee University). Lee, who had opposed succession and the war, became a national icon for reconciliation between the North and South. In 1866 he testified before the Joint Congressional Committee on Reconstruction in Washington where he express the need for public education for the blacks. This is something that today's and future students can be proud of the man that there school is named.

Political views a side, at an average price of $800k, as was the cost to change the name of J.E.B. Stuart HS to $1 million, it is astonishing that the Fairfax County School Board would deem the changing of Robert E. Lee High Schools name as one of their highest financial priorities. In a time when teachers are underpaid, school programs are underfunded and more students than ever are attending classes in trailers, certainly that abundance of federal, state and local dollars could be allocated in a more efficient manner?! As a parent, I would much rather see the funding used towards the education for the young men and women within the public school system.

Please don’t change the name of my high school. It will always be Robert E. Lee and should retain its name. History cannot be changed. We can only hope to learn from it and do better in the future.
