As an owner in the Lake Street Gateway District, I am against the proposed garage for the Park District Buildings and Grounds Department on the corner of Lake St. and Humphrey Ave. With the closing of the Aldi grocery store, we have seen a sharp drop in pedestrian foot traffic and the Gateway District is in desperate need of revitalization. About three years ago, the leadership at the Park District chose to build a skate park and basketball courts at the adjacent Stevenson Park. This controversial decision has given young people an alternative means of gathering and exercising in a constructive way and is of great value to the community. Similarly, the proposed indoor gymnastics center would be a welcome addition that would give more youth the additional opportunities they need to exercise and develop their athletic abilities year round. The gymnastics center would also bring many families into the Gateway District for the first time, and would expose them to the new and longstanding local businesses, apartments, and homes surrounding east Lake Street. This is a unique opportunity to strengthen the community offerings and businesses in the Lake Street Gateway District.
