Having access to a clean, comfortable, and private space for a mother to pump is an essential part of ensuring their ability to balance family and career without sacrificing the health of their baby. Currently, Indeed's home—and home to several artist studios—in the Solar Arts Building does not have an area that fits these needs.
Indeed has taken various steps to negotiate with our landlord in allowing us to build a lactation room while offering to pay for all costs associated with the construction. Still, they have yet to provide a valid explanation as to why they will not allow us to do so.
Our current brewery and rental space layout do not allow for us to create a type of area that would properly suit the needs of a nursing mother, which is why we scouted an unused and neglected corner of the building that would be a great fit.
We believe in a woman's right to have access to discreet and safe options for pumping and breastfeeding so we're asking our community to help us illustrate how important this issue is by signing this petition for us to create a lactation room in our building. This room would affect the entire Solar Arts Building and benefit the 100,000+ visitors that come to Indeed each year. I’m a new mom and lactation stations are a MUST! I need to feed my son every two hours and have often decided not to visit businesses due to his feeding schedule.
I am a taproom enthusiast and a nursing mother. Women seek out businesses and buildings that are breastfeeding friendly. I make choices on where I spend my time and money based on whether or not I can easily and safely care for my son in a clean space. Build a mother's room! You won't regret it.
I just gotta laugh at this one too. I’ve seriously tried to find a solution with our landlord over the course of about 100 emails and conversations. It should be readily possible to allow a cooperative space among these tenants to provide a space for these needs right away. It makes sense on so many levels, and the cooperation of the building owner should not be a barrier.
As a mother I have struggled to find places where I can be a social adult while also feeling welcomed as a mother. Allowing a brushing room in this building would allow me to be with friends and family out in the community. I would not need to “hide” or got to my vehicle to nurse.
At Solar Arts, we strongly agree employers should provide a discrete nursing space for their employees - it's a no-brainer! And MN Stat 181.939 makes it clear it's the employer's responsibility to do so. As such, we're perplexed why Indeed has chosen not to create lactation space in the 15,000 square feet they manage. They built a break room for employees on-site, and there is nothing stopping them from creating a lactation room, too. At one point, we even lined up a separate suite/office for them to rent, but they decided to back out at the last minute. We strongly encourage Indeed to follow the lead of responsible employers everywhere and make their workplace compliant. Maybe if they get enough signatures on this petition they will take action! The space they want is private artist space and only open to the public 20 days or so each year. In the meantime, Solar Arts will instead continue to provide free space to women and community groups like the Women's Art Resources of Minnesota and Girls On The Run and many other non-profits to support fundraising efforts, as we have for the last several years.
If we as a society are to truly support breastfeeding mothers/families, we must dedicate public spaces for that purpose. Proper lactation spaces give pumping and breastfeeding mothers the confidence and comfort they need to continue breastfeeding their babies until a time that is optimal for the health of both the infant and breastfeeding parent.

I spent 15 minutes during the last Art-A-Whirl standing next to the sink and staring back at all the women standing in the line out the open door of the women's room. I was pumping. I very much support something with a little more dignity.
