To make things even more unsafe staff is being pulled from other swedish hospital in the area... Staff that has never been orientated to the hospital with the shortage.

The Swedish labor nurses are some of the strongest, most hard working and brilliant people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. These nurses are a staple to the Seattle community, providing top notch care and compassion to those they serve. I implore Swedish to change the unhealthy, unsafe and unsustainable work environment they have created.

SAFE STAFFING SAVES LIVES. Patients OVER PROFITS. Shame on you Providence. And you call yourselves a Catholic organization...

Nurses should be placed on a hold pedestal for the work they do. They should be given more then Doctors for the general care, love and support they provide.

It’s time you make good on your mission of Health for Good. Come through for your patients. Come through for your staff. Come through for the community. I used to be proud to work at Swedish. I felt I had what was needed to do a job well done. I see all around me how things have quickly declined due to management’s actions, and what’s worse patients see it as well. They comment to me about it. It is embarrassing for me personally and shameful to the institution. I was also forced to stay over into mandatory overtime. I saw a struggling though good hearted crew who were doing everything they could to juggle an unreasonable patient load. Management did nothing to help. It saddens me deeply to see these young nurses forced to choose between their health and well-being and a job they’ve loved due to unsafe staffing. It is simply unacceptable to put patient’s wellbeing and safety on the line. The answer is simple- safe staffing.

I can attest to the above as a former full-time RN on Swedish First Hill Labor & Delivery and hereby submit my signature in support of all my fellow nurses and their commitment to safe nursing practice. Thank you!

I haven’t even been at Swedish as an L@D nurse for 2 years yet and I’m constantly considering quitting and finding a more sustainable job for my health and well being since all these recent changes and staffing cuts. The only thing keeping me at Swedish is my amazing coworkers and team and the passion I have for caring for moms and babies. It makes me so sad and disappointed then instead of being proud to say I work at a swedish, I am embarrassed because money and the bottom line are clearly the priority over patient care and well being. I have anxiety and dread coming to work now, knowing that I may be put into unsafe situations without proper resources, putting my patients at risk and my RN license at jeopardy. I bring my same lunch back and forth between my night shifts because no change to eat or break more shifts than not. Delivering us pizza or Jimmy John sandwiches to make up for this is not acceptable and actually really frustrating. Morale on the unit is plummeting and our patients are going to start really feeling it. It really is sickening how management is treating us and literally just watching us drown in high census and understaffing. I feel like a number to management and completely under valued. If things don’t change soon, I will be leaving, along with many others....wouldn’t Swedish want to retain hard working and passionate staff they have paid to train? CHANGE needs to happen NOW

I completely agree with the unsafe staffing issues , I was here when mandatory nurses had to stay over , I was told that our CNO Christy Carrington was called to perhaps offer double time so those nurses could go home and we get fresh nurses to take care of our overwhelming amount of pts. Her answer was NO! And when people do stay over and work 16 hours and come back the next day they are told if it wasn’t mandatory that you stay you DO NOT get the first 4 hours of your shift paid at OT , I have been a nurse for 40 years and we always got the OT pay for retuning to work , who on your panel of 3 Is Backing this info??? PLEASE ANSWER

As a newer nurse with only 2 years on this unit I already feel like leaving due to the current working conditions. Repeatedly being overworked with unsafe ratios, and usually without mandated breaks. Half of the cohort I was hired with has already left. My mental and physical health has declined due to the sacrifices I have made at work solely for the love of my patients and colleagues. How many mothers, babies and families will we traumatize and risk their lives for before this changes? L&D isn't just about life and death, it's about the culture of the care we give in this country contributing to PTSD and PPMD. It is absolutely unacceptable and sickening. It's detrimental to our society. STOP IT.

The only thing keeping me at Swedish are the co workers I have. There aren’t any better out there. I have never felt more disrespected and disgusted by management and how we are being treated. We are put into unsafe situations almost daily, where there is no help available. I hate watching our charge nurses struggle to do their best and hold the unit together while trying to find staff for more patients than nurses we have available. I dread coming to work now, a place I used to love and looked forward to come to, and am actively looking at other jobs so that I can decrease my FTE or go per diem at Swedish to increase my quality of life and not feel so unappreciated all the time by management who clearly doesn’t have a clue of what we do.

I was one of the nurses who was mandated to work 16 hours, as well as come back to work at 7am the next day. I have an infant and toddler at home and am breastfeeding/pumping. What a cruel irony that I was forced to stay at work to help other moms and babies while sacrificing the needs of my own baby. I am outraged that it has come to this. Swedish is losing great nurses because of unsafe staffing. When will it end??

The working conditions at Swedish First Hill are getting very unsafe and we should not be put in a position by management of risking our licenses because Swedish/Providence wants to save a buck so it’s CEO can get his bonus. Show us you care about your employees by providing safe staffing. We don’t need your pizza, ice cream, or lanyards!!

Other Swedish campuses are being given double time to come in. We are struggling to even get time and 1/2. Nothing is being done to retain nurses we do have.

I am a former First Hill L&D RN. I loved my co-workers and L&D, but I left because of unsafe and demoralizing working conditions. The management team at Swedish made me feel like a number instead of a human.

The constant (sometimes 5 per shift!) desperate help texts bring down the morale of those living our outside lives. It feels awful knowing that your coworkers are suffering and you’re unable to help. Working yourself to the bone shouldn’t have to be the norm. Feeling like you’re failing your colleagues when you’re taking care of your family, working other jobs, or simply resting your mind and body shouldn’t be the norm.

Former SFH L&D RN. I left my position and coworkers I love dearly because of the absolutely unsafe conditions and terrible working conditions. Please take care of your patients and your staff.

Staffing decisions by management over the last year has devastated our moral and undermines our institutions mission and reputation in our community.
