Kosher Restaurant in Seward Park

As the Executive Director of a nonprofit, Jewish heritiage touring organization, it is really important to the welfare of Jewish tourism in the LES to have a proper, kosher restaurant option. The groups who come to the LES from out of the area would oftern dine at Noah's Ark out of deference to the few kosher folk among them - these groups also help the local economy, and having them dine on Grand Street keeps them in the neighborhood longer. kosher

Many residents of this historic area have strong ties to traditional judaism and it's kashrut laws. What made the lower east side famous was its historic religious Jewish population, which is what attracts many tourists from around the globe. Not only does kosher meat demand higher stands, the quality of food is far better, which is known to many non-Jews as well.

There should be a kosher resturant because eiither people who come to visit should be able to have some place to eat.It would be a shame that with the LES' with it's history, doesn't have an establishment that serves kosher meat dining.

I look forward to seeing the Glatt Kosher restaurant in the neighborhood. There are senior citizens on the Lower East Side that do not cook often and would greatly benefit from the restaurant. ALL THE BEST.

it is up to the restaurant to create a quality and uniqueness to have people want to go out and spend their money. The last deli, Noah's Ark lasted 10 years which is a fairly decent amount of time and perhaps there is more than we know of that made them not pay the rent, etc. Hopefully, the coop did not double the rent for the new owners (whoever they might be). There is a kosher restaurant on West 46th St in the diamond district that seems to have a varied menu but of course midtown manhattan is very busy with more diners. There are others here in the neighborhood that are of other ethnic backgrounds who would probably also like to dine there just as many non kosher jews frequent Chinese, Spanish restaurants. Whatever it takes to make this new restaurant successful, i hope that the kosher restaurant will have good ideas. Sharon Becker

this neighborhood should retain the historical jewish values. Having a glatt kosher restaurant would certainly be beneficial for the many people who like to dine out and after this we should have many more types of kosher cafes/restaurants.

Greetings fellow Grand Street Jews, Like you, I've been asked to sign the petition for a new kosher restaurant to replace Noah's Ark. I did sign -- but only reluctantly. Why the hesitation? Because such an enterprise is probably doomed to failure. Look, I'm not interested in a Noah's Ark replay: another kosher joint perennially losing money, missing its rent, and ultimately shutting down. And why would this happen? Largely for lack of support from the local Jewish community. You. Us. Let's face it: the ever-dwindling kosher food-eating population down here just doesn't go out for dinner much or orders food in very often. Many down here NEVER dine out. Any restaurant, especially one this large, is VERY expensive to run, especially in Manhattan. I know -- I used to own one. In order to get beyond break-even, a restaurant requires constant turnover of all tables at dinner -- at least three times an evening on average, regular lunch traffic, a substantial delivery business and constant take-out. Without all this traffic, a restaurant will wither away and die. That's why 90% close in the first year. If kosher Jews want a kosher restaurant around here, they'll have to support it -- very strongly. Otherwise it won't make it. Are all of you willing to put your money where your (kosher) mouth is?
