Today , September 2nd, 2020 was Klein ISD‘s “on-campus” face to face learning & “online” simulation.
We would like to take the time to thank all Klein ISD staff for their commitment to providing our students with the information, guidance and tools deemed necessary in order to begin the 2020-2021 academic school year.
Parents and students alike are excited about klein ISD reopening. Many of us chose “on-campus” learning for our students because in person classroom instruction has the added benefit for many students of interpersonal interaction between the student and the teacher and the student and peers. Teachers are able to more actively participate in student learning, provide feedback as students encounter challenges and promote active learning among students. Special education students usually require in class support and by choosing “on-campus” learning we agree that the academic, mental and physical benefits of in-person learning outweigh the risks.
Our students are excited about returning to school. Learning in person, seeing old friends, making new ones, meeting their teachers (face to face) & having some much needed social interaction. Unfortunately, many of us did not get positive feedback from our students after today’s simulations. Many of us were told that due to the mask mandates, students and staff were non social, anxious, uncomfortable and some even experienced difficulty breathing and/or communicating with those around them.
Due to the teachers having to give “in-person” and “online instruction” simultaneously many had our “on-campus “ students on zooms in most classes just like the students at home..,The only difference was our students “on-campus” are required to wear a mask. Many of our students were told by their teachers that this will be a daily experience.
We recognize the importance of ensuring the general welfare and protecting the health of the community. Schools are an important part of the infrastructure of communities and play a critical role in supporting the whole child, not just their academic achievement.
Governor Greg Abbott recently stated that local school districts have the discretion over when and how to begin the 2020-2021 school year.
We believe Klein ISD should implement a waiver of choice. This waiver would give parents and caregivers the opportunity to make a sound decision with their students and families allowing them to choose whether or not wearing a mask for the duration of each school day is a good choice for them.
When we reach our goal this petition will be presented to the superintendent of Klein ISD, the Texas education agency and Governor Greg Abbott.

The feedback coming in from parents is heartbreaking and proves that the district is ignoring the reality of the classroom. Klein ISD officials are forcing our kids to stay in masks that make it impossible to learn or breathe while they pretend everything is fine. We are taking this fight directly to the school board next and demand they stop prioritizing optics over student health.

The administration at Klein ISD is trying to ignore us but this surge in support proves they cannot hide from the reality that these mandates are hurting our kids. We are dragging their failed policies into the light and they will be forced to answer for this unnecessary suffering.

I’m a student in Klein ISD going into my sophomore year. Yesterday at the simulation/orientation I noticed many of my fellow peers as well as myself struggling with anxiety due to the mask mandates. Teachers didn’t seem to know what they were doing because of having to teach online and on campus at the same time. They kept apologizing to the students for having to make us all wear masks. I saw some students crying, some had issues breathing and a few even experienced a panic attack. I agree with the waiver to choose. Virtual learning is not a practical option for most.
For students with asthma the mask impairs their breathing. Having to wear the mask for eight hours could cause a more stressful environment which would not be helpful to learning.
I’m a student at Klein oak and yesterday on September 2nd for simulation day, it was sooo hard for me to breathe with the mask on. I also had to repeat my name and other things several times because I have a deep and quiet voice. I’m not gonna speak louder so that you can hear me when I’m being made to wear a mask for 8 hours! I 100% agree with this. It should be our decision on wether or not we wear a mask.
Governor says 10 years and older! Children with sensory issues cannot wear a mask! Shame on KISD.
I have a Klein Oak Senior. If I have a waiver option I will send her in person.
Unmask Texas! We are not animals and should not be forced to wear things across our faces as such!
Parents should have the choice for their child.

Masks should be optional as children are learning very valuable social skills to drive them through the future. Let's keep some normalcy and allow kids to identify their friends. Masks are not the new normal. It's the new abnormal
