On Tuesday 19th September Kirklees Metropolitan Council will meet to decide proposed price increases for Bereavement Services. The MBCNK (Muslim Burial Council, North Kirklees) feels that the proposed increases are completely unfair and outrageous. What is particularly distressing was the lack for consultation, stakeholders having only been contacted on the 12th September. We urge the Cabinet to oppose the recommendations and ask for a full review.
Potential price rises sees current fees of a basic earthen grave with timber going from £1,999 to £3,525 by the end of 2021. Families distressed at losing loved ones will be further hit by these dramatically higher costs. Not to mention an added surcharge should the burial need to be done on a Friday afternoon or weekend. Which particularly hits the muslim community who deem it a religious duty to bury the deceased promptly.
Let's be honest though, regardless of religion or race, hiking bereavement costs is morally questionable and deserves greater notice and discussion than a week.

I have been staring at these proposed fees all morning and honestly the math just feels predatory considering how little time they gave us to even prepare for this change. I am currently spending most of my time firing off emails to anyone who will listen because this whole process was rushed through without a real conversation with the people it actually hurts.

I just looked at the screen and saw the counter hit one hundred signatures which is honestly a lot more than I expected when I started this earlier today. It feels like people actually care about this unfair price hike and it makes me think we might actually get someone at the council to listen for once. I am drinking way too much coffee right now but I am just so glad to see this starting to move.

This is disgraceful. Families go through an immensely difficult time when a loved one is lost. Increasing costs will only put more families into debt in an economy that has already made it difficult for those who live on the breadline.
Please consider the impact of this on communities that are underprivileged in the work that they are able to do. The Asian community is not represented in higher paid jobs and is still only employed in the minimum wage mainly type industties
This is absolutely not the correct way to go. I understand local councils are under strain due to decreases in central budgets but this is not the way forward to slap an increased fee onto the deceased and put further financial strain on bereaving families.
Such an extortionate price hike and that too without consultation....this requires a proper review and consultation at every stage of the process. As if losing a loved one isn't traumatic enough. Added pressure and stress of the burial costs is not required.
It's going to make passing away unaffordable as well as living is already!! Come on Kirklees why are you guy's doing this to the community? Let us bury our dead with dignity!! NOT DEBT!! . PS. Are you planning on living for ever?

Not happy with this at all! As if its not dear enough to bury a loved one in Kirklees as things are at the moment. I will be looking in to how my councillors vote on this matter and will use my vote accordingy at next council elections.
