Naming your product/startup with Japanese words might seem hip and all, but it dilutes Japanese culture, especially when the brand/product has nothing to do with what the word actually represents.
Kim Kardashian said she has no intention of ever selling anything that would "resemble or dishonor" the traditional item of clothing, but that is exactly what she is doing - with absolutely no understanding or respect for the significance of the kimono in Japanese culture.
Please sign this petition if you feel she should change the name of her brand; hopefully she will hear our voice and make a change.

The feedback from those of you who understand the cultural weight of this issue has kept me going through the exhaustion. I am still working to reach the right people because this name trivializes something that is sacred to so many. We remain committed to this even when the progress feels slow and the silence from the brand feels heavy.

Reaching this level of momentum proves people understand that cultural history is not a branding opportunity to be exploited for profit. The fatigue of defending our heritage is heavy but seeing this level of alignment keeps me moving forward.

This is disrespectful to the Japanese people, this is their culture, roots and traditions which you seemed to ignore. Don't name something that doesn't represent a Kimono have a different name. The name doesn't even have a meaning behind your brand or product come up with something that is more suitable. And please don't even say it's your idea of the name Kimono should and has belonged to the Japanese people.
Please just change the name. You can easily come up with something better, more catchy and well worth people actually wanting to buy your product.
We did it!!! She is changing the name!!
Let's just call this what it is: re-appropriated Spanx. While Spanx is not an *entirely* original idea and not the first "shaper" out there, at least Sara Blakely didn't try to trademark the word, "girdle" or any foreign language translation of that word... which actually *could* be considered valid! Did you *just* want a Japanese word that contained "KIM"? OPTIONS that you might have gotten away with (because I believe if I'm going to complain, I should at least offer possible solutions): - A simple Google search for "girdle Japanese translation" would have produced "Gādoru" right away! You don't get the "KIM" part, but if you *really* needed the "K", "KāDORU"! That would have been INFINITELY better! And it would make a *little* more sense, but making sense is clearly not an issue for you. - Even better... a Google search for "shape Japanese translation" yields "Keijō"! You got your "K" right off the bat! - "Keijo West" wouldn't be a bad choice either: loosely translated, it could mean "western shape". See how simple that was? But, no... you couldn't even do *that* much, and that makes your choice(s) so much more insulting, morally and ethically reprehensible and downright UNFURIATING!!! p.s. Is there no Armenian word that starts with a "K"? Just askin'.

I did not use my real first name for personal reasons. Kim you say “ I won’t disrespect your culture”, then you turn around and say “ I won’t change the name” that is a contradiction!! You don’t just say “ I respect this and I will never do anything to demean it” then say “ I’m not going to change the offense against the “ thing you love and would never disrespect” because I payed for it” you can’t just say/act like I’m rich, I’m famous so there for I can buy this cultural item/ ideal and I now own it, I made it, so it’s mine!! Really?!! So if someone took something from your culture and said I love and respect it then turn around and say it’s mine because I now own the name/ item exclusively and I will not change it because I’m rich and I have money. I know it would not be ok with you. Why do it to another cultures item/idea? I know we all make mistakes. I know some people who will say something similar about a item/idea because that’s what people most commonly know/associate with that culture. Some people will also use it just to make money off it. And even worse some people will continue to do culture appropriation just to get money and fame. If this happened to you or your cultural background. Just cuz your rich and famous doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want!!

Cultural appropriation isnt a style trend. Educate yourself and pick a name that actually makes sense.
