The Harper Government has introduced "The Safe Streets and Communities Act" into Parliament. Essentially, making sentences longer, and adding many manditory minimum sentences, particularly for drug crimes. This approach to crime is a proven failure. Manditory minimums will fill our prisons, create more hardened criminals, cost the taxpayers of Canada billions of dollars per year, and leave us no safer then we ever were. In fact, it will leave us less safe. Criminologist, lawyers and judges will tell you that this is a disaster for our justice system, our economy and our society. Therefore, we hereby call on the Government of Canada to prevent the passage of this "Safe Streets and Communities Act" into law.

I have been reading your stories about how these mandatory minimums threaten the people we love and they reinforce why this fight is so necessary. Our justice system is heading toward a cliff and we must keep pushing until they realize this path only leads to more harm.

Seeing one hundred people recognize the danger in these mandatory minimums means the world to me. My brother was caught in a cycle that prison only worsened and I know we deserve a smarter approach to justice.

Keep our communities safe by focusin on rehab not just locking everyone up for decades. this is not the right way.
This is just gonna cost us billions and make things worse. Harper needs to quit with this backwards thinking.
TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY! Harper is clueless.
Mandatory minimums never work. just look at how it went down in the states. we should be smarter than this.
My brother is a lawyer and he says this bill is a absolute disaster for the courts. listen to the experts for once.

Stop wasting tax payer money on prisons when we could be putting it into actual programs that help people. so frustrating.
