Kids Not Cars

I own a house a block and a half from Camas Ridge and for several years I lived across the street. This neighborhood does not have the capacity to handle a larger volume of traffic. There are many children who play in the streets, elderly people that walk up and down the streets from the care facility, and many cyclists. Why not encourage active transportation and turn the large parking lot into greenspace that will help regulate the hotter days we are experiencing due to climate change?

Please reduce % of planned parking. It is not necessary and the children would benefit more from the preservation of as much green space as possible.

Let's lead the way for our children to understand that we should focus on moving people from place to place, rather than cars.

There just doesn't seem to be a logical reason to spend the time and money redoing something that works. I mean heck, there's a literal example of a school with NO parking lot a few blocks away. It just doesn't make sense to spend time and money on things for no logical reason.

Kids need outdoor space to play! Not to park cars. Encourage active forms of transportation to school and reduce the size of the planned parking lot. Let’s plan for the future we want!

An elementary school shouldn't need 25% of it's land covered in asphalt!.

By continuing with the current plan favoring cars, we model patriarchal choices regarding this planet. Changing this way of thinking needs to be embedded in each decision starting now. It’s mandatory.

The current parking lot is empty the majority of the time and is used mostly by community members in off hours for non-school related activities, some of which are non-preferred (i.e. sketchy or disruptive) for the neighborhood. I would support the parking lot being reduced to a size that just allows adequate space for school personnel and after school events/sports. I agree alternate modes of transportation should be encouraged and supported by the planned facilities as well.

Rather than paving the earth for cars ... imagine all the ways that we can reconnect kids to nature.

Build more bike racks!

Automobiles take up too much space and they kill too many people and they cause too much pollution. Turn parking lot into park, play space and wildlife habitat.

Parking and car-centric amenities should definitely be minimized. Waste of space and taxpayer money. Also, for any parking that is built, the planners should consider the dangers of head-in parking that requires backing up. Backing up at elementary schools is a high risk activity.

A school with a little forest on the side, or a rock garden, or a farm plot, or a maze of swales with solar panels above and water drainage below--those might be great things to have next to a school, not a big parking lot.

This would not be a responsible use of Bond money, on a number of levels. Just say no to outdated, oversized car parking facilities!

Slide the Gym towards University St. and use the resulting space for more, much needed outdoor play space. This will make the Gym more accessible for community events as well.

We need to be forward thinking and actively encouraging students and parents to be traveling in ways other than by car. A parking lot of the size planned sends the message that it is normal and right to drive to school. We should instead make it easier to walk, bike, and bus to school, and center healthy habits for individuals and the community. Consider that demand is induced by design, not the other way around.

Large parking lots are not looking towards the needs for our future. Let's use the great space designated for the school for much better uses -- like gardens, play areas, outdoor classroom space and instead provide covered, secured, adequate bike parking and safe routes for walking.

We need to educate our children to respect the planet they will live with the rest of their lives.
