Kenmore's a gr8 school, but this would make it a much more inclusive place for all students to actively get an education in an environment accommodating to their needs!

It just takes one move to change the mentality of any environment , an there for the community's they intertwine with.

If you don't sign this, you aren't a very switched on person. It is disgraceful that there has to be this group in the first place. Some people, humans the same as you, feel uncomfortable and insecure in their everyday life for something they have no control over... Help get everyone to feel safe!

I support gay people. We should all treat each other equally! You should be able to love who ever you want to love. Don't Forget To Smile D.F.T.S. :D

the fact that lgbt individuals don't feel safe in a school is absurd and down right disgraceful by the teachers and principal. Your job is to teach these children, and

This won't stop grade 7-10. But maybe later grades may care. TBH Kenmore is a shithole and those of non straight sexualities where stigmatised. Kenmore is fucked.

Great opportunity to raise awareness about everyone and provide a forum to openly discuss issues which surrounds young people and their families and communities

This is a really good idea. In a time like this in which many teens are coming out as gay and lesbian, I could not think of a better idea.

This is a brilliant idea and should be provided by many schools.

i 100% agree with this, everyone should have a right to feel safe in their school. Bullying should not be allowed at all, and just because somebody might be gay, doesn't give anyone the right to bully or pick on them. We all have a right to be true to ourselves.

A recent study conducted by Beyondblue has revealed concerning Homophobia that is taking place among adolescents in our school environments. In the study, 40 percent of respondents said they felt "uncomfortable" and "anxious" when in the presence of same-sex attracted persons. The study also examined the harmful implications this discriminatory behaviour can have on the mental health and future prospects of many LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer) youth. To name a few, depression, anxiety, severe stress and sadly suicidal thoughts. LGBTIQ youth, like all youth, need access to a safe and supportive space where they can develop a strong and confident identity, they need to feel accepted by their community. This, in turn, can provide LGBTIQ youth with the necessary psychological skills they will need to succeed in their personal, academic and professional lives. With these skills, they can positively impact those around them and realise their academic and creative potential. How can a school succeed academically when no such space exists and there is cultural division in place? This is exactly why Kenmore State High School needs a Gay-Straight alliance. LGBTIQ youth should not have to feel isolated simply for being who they are. In the end, Homophobia and Transphobia hurts all parties involved as it limits group cohesiveness, a vitally important skill required in all after school work professions. Please consider this petition that has been proposed and let's have an open, mature, reasonable and professional discussion about the matter.
