The Hospital Authority finally agreed to include all our requested healthcare guarantees in the new contract. This fight exhausted me, but seeing these protections secured makes every late night worth the effort. Now we watch the implementation to ensure they actually follow through on their promise.
Attention Prince George’s County Hospital Authority:
The residents of Prince George’s County deserve a healthcare system that is prepared to meet the basic health care needs of county residents. Any organization seeking to own and operate the Prince George’s County health system must guarantee to improve the quality of medical care available to county residents while maintaining the current level of services.
We, the undersigned, demand that the Hospital Authority require all bidders seeking to purchase the Prince George’s County hospital system commit to
1) Counseling patients on the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections,
2) Ensuring that patients have access to family planning and abortion services, consistent with applicable law and sound medical practice;
3) Ensuring that male and female patients have access to elective surgical sterilization procedures;
4) Providing emergency contraception to all patients who request it, and in particular sexual assault victims.
The silence from the Hospital Authority is frustrating but it does not mean we are stopping. I am still pushing for answers behind the scenes even when the days feel like a grind.

Keep these services in our county. We need real healthcare not some religious nonsense blocking our medical choices.

Ridiculous that we even have to fight for this in 2017. patients deserve options when they are in an emergency.
