Petition to change the by-law concerning the keeping of exotic pets in The City of Hamilton, ON.
According to the By-law we are not allowed to keep any class 4 or 5 animal within the city. This by-law states that we are not permitted to keep any exotic pet at all.
This petition is to make a positive impact on, and to further our society by allowing the thousands of good people who already own exotic pets not break any laws.
The current By-law is extremely outdated, passed the 28th of August, 1984, and absolutely needs to be updated, to compensate the more and more people choosing exotics as pets.
The emails I receive from owners living in constant fear of losing their pets are heavy and hard to read. I am spending my evenings chasing down officials who would rather ignore this issue than acknowledge that the laws from decades ago no longer fit our reality.
April 1, 2008
Reaching this point has been a long road and my energy is low but seeing this momentum keeps me going. It is clear that I am not the only one exhausted by these outdated rules. We will keep moving forward even when the process feels slow.

1984 was a long time ago. Laws should keep up with the times. My reptile is a part of my family and it is ridiculous that he is technically illegal.

Let us keep our pets legally. It is stressful enough worrying about bylaw knocking on the door when I have done nothing wrong.

Keepin an animal is a responsible choice if the owner knows what they are doing. Dont punish the good owners because of a few bad apples.

Seems like a waste of resources to go after people with exotics. Focus on real crimes instead.
