Keep Gunston as GMU\'s Mascot
Dear Mr. Ruge, An article in the June 2, 2006 edition of the Washington Post detailed plans to remove Gunston as the official mascot of our beloved George Mason University. The article mentioned surveys from years past as the basis for the decision to remove Gunston. We believe the outdated surveys should be conducted again and also that the entire student body be actively involved in the process. We are appalled that these out-of-date polls have been used to cite a lack of love for Gunston as the primary reason he will no longer ride around the Patriot Center on his scooter, or make random appearances in the Johnson Center. Perhaps the students and community members polled are among those who jumped on the bandwagon in during the madness in March, and never really had GMU in their hearts. Maybe they are just upset because Gunston never gave them the free pizza at a basketball game. Whatever the reason, we believe that these people do not speak for the majority. We have signed this petition to prove the article and campus officials wrong! We hope that you will reconsider, and keep Gunston as the official mascot of GMU. Sincerely, The Undersigned Students, Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Fans and Friends of George Mason University cc: Dr. Alan G. Merten Mr. Tom O\'Connor
