The school board has reversed their decision and will keep the fifth grade within our elementary schools. This outcome reflects the commitment of everyone who reviewed the research and pushed for our students. We will continue to monitor the administration to ensure this policy remains in place for the future.

“Our results complement the recent finding that school systems that move sixth grade from elementary to middle school experience a 1-3 percent decline in on-time graduation rates (Bedard & Do 2005). We conclude that placing sixth grade in middle school increases behavior problems and reduces academic performance, both in sixth grade and subsequently. It is entirely plausible that these effects could have the effect for some students of leading to retention in grade or dropout. Together these findings cast serious doubt on the wisdom of the historic nationwide shift to the middle school format.”

The level of engagement regarding our position on grade configuration has surpassed my initial expectations. This collective momentum indicates that our community recognizes the importance of the research shared here. I am currently preparing the documentation to present these concerns to the school board.

I have been reviewing the research from Duke University regarding developmental transitions for ten and eleven year old students. This evidence will be central to our upcoming presentation for the school board members. Your commitment to keeping our children in the elementary environment is clear and helps us maintain a strong position as these discussions continue.

NO! Keep our 5th graders off the middle school buses. They need another year of being treated like kids.
Ridiculous idea. They are still just babies!
My son is in 4th now and he is definitely not ready for the middle school environment next year. Please rethink this!!
Just look at the studies. It hurts their grades and social development. Leave them in elementary.
Why mess with what works? Leave it alone.
