Leave the school where it's at and has been for years!!! I went to school at that location and I want my one year old daughter to go there when it's her time to go to high school. It's bad enough that they tore down Pierceton elementary and built a different school on that property instead of just renovating the school. Smh. Keep it where it's at!!

The fight to keep the high school in South Whitley has nothing to do with the 40+ year old argument regarding location. At this point it needs to be based on sound business principle and factual numbers. The math and logic just simply do not add up. Census figures do not lie-surprisingly there are more people living in South Whitley now than in 1970 and there are fewer living in Sidney, Larwill and Pierceton. The South Whitley community contributes more tax money and more community based support to the school corporation than the other communities as well including funding from our library and funding for the police officer that is at the high school.
Moving the high school out to Larwill makes no economic sense. That building is in need of as much repair as the high school and it is 20 years newer. It surely would require additional bussing and where would that money come from? What are the 2/3 of the high school students who do not yet drive supposed to do after school before extra-curricular activities? Walk along SR 5 to the gas station in Larwill to eat? What about emergencies? Do you want the nearest police or EMS service to be 20 plus minutes away? I don't.
The truth is that enrollment began dropping the year the new middle school opened and has continued to do so every year since then in part because of the issues that plagued that school but also because people truly want their schools in their communities. There is no reason to believe and no argument to be made that indicates enrollment will not continue to decline. In fact, based on trends of the past I think it reasonable to believe that enrollment will continue to drop to the point that 20 years from now we won't be making decisions about location of buildings. We will instead be deciding what other corporation to merge with because Whitko will cease to exist altogether. Does this board really want to be remembered as the board who made the decision that led to the demise of the schoo

There is no NEED to move the high school out in the middle of nowhere. Having the junior high there is bad enough!

They just need to close the whole school corporation and send the kids to Columbia City or Warsaw.

You’re only killing the town more if you move the high school. Keep it where it’s at. Why even fix what isn’t broken?

Actually, it’s being pushed by the school board! And the South Whitley Town Council has brought back our annual Fall Festival! That has attracted small start up vendors to South Whitley. South Whitley is more attractive since this past election than it was prior!

Lets get this straight.... This movement is being pushed by the South Whitley Town Board, who already can't manage Town money and utility rates to make it affordable to live in South Whitley or be attractive to a business to build within our community and they want to let their personal beef with Parkview hurt the town by again spending taxpayer money on something that wasn't broken to begin with. But hey they can put sidewalk approaches in at every intersection... (good luck getting from one approach to the next)
Moving the High School isn't about hurting feelings and such its about saving taxpayers money. When closing a building the board will consider the age of buildings, ADA acceptability, cost to add onto, etc... So with that said do you want to keep open a building that is already 40+ years old and doesn't meet today's ADA standards or keep open a building that meets all current ADA standards and has room for expansion?
Also the comments about traveling on State Road 5, how do you think the families that live in Pierceton area get to the current High School?
The real question should be- what has the current South Whitley Town Council done to improve, or attract families to South Whitley? I sure haven't seen anything except the raising cost of my utility bill....
