The dining halls will finally begin displaying nutritional labels for the meals they serve. My eyes are heavy and the process wore me down but seeing this change happen for us makes the struggle worth it. Keep watching to ensure they actually follow through on these new requirements.

We the students, faculty/staff, alumni and family of the University of Tampa hereby petition for the nutritional labeling of food in all dining halls on campus. These include:

  • Ultimate Dining
  • Morsani Hall

This will ensure that, at a university that preaches a liberal education, students will be able to make more educated and informed choices about how they fuel themselves for success. Primary concern include:

  • Students with allergies (nut allergies, lactose intolerance, etc.)
  • Students with health conditions (such as diabetes)
  • Student athletes
  • Health-conscious individuals striving to gain, lose, or maintain weight
  • Students with dietary restrictions (religious or otherwise)

It is the duty of the university to cater to the needs of its paying students. Please stand up for your fight to informed decision-making by signing.

We just hit 500 signatures. It is an exhausting road to get anyone to listen but seeing this number helps keep me going.

I’ve been a vegetarian for five years, so I would appreciate if the restaurants on campus had food labels. Whenever I ask a cafe worker what’s inside the food they’re serving they never know. Or for instance today, 3-12-18, I picked Lima beans because the menu only said Lima beans and when I started to eat the beans I realized they had some kind of meat inside of them. Thankful I hadn’t eaten the beans enough to reach the meat, but if I had I could’ve gotten very sick. I love UT, but I would appreciate if they cared a little more about my nutrition and lifestyle as a vegetarian.

As someone who is Dairy Free and Soy free due to allergies, it is extremely important to have allergen information available and easy to read. You should never have to risk an allergic reaction to any of the Top 8 Allergens just to feed your body the nutrients it needs in order to concentrate and perform at top levels in the classroom or in life.

Students should have access to information that allows them to make educated decisions. Nutrition is vital to creating healthy individuals in holistic ways. Providing clear signage in dining halls would allow students more agency in their food selections.

This would be really helpful for students who have specific nutritional accommodation that need to be met

It’s pretty ridiculous and unsafe to not label foods! Especially when half of the time I can’t tell what foods in Ultimate Dining are just by looking at them.

Nutrition labels are not a privledge. We as humans have a right to know the food or lack there of that we are ingesting and any suggestion otherwise is ignorant.
