It is the achievements that are recognized by such monuments as statutes. No one person and no one ethnic group is without their faults. If we focus on the faults of the individual there won't me any statues to keep. Christopher Columbus rejected the common belief of his time that the world was flat and had the courage and tenacity to get the resources to prove it with a very dangerous voyage. For this achievement as well as what it means to Italian Americans in terms of their own journey and trials, the statue must stay.

Extremely proud of our Italian hystory and its humble but yet very significant gift to this country...all to show that the old generation of legal immigrants even though had their own hardships and prejudices...stayed strong in their perseverance to assimilate and helped make this country even stronger..and just wish that this beautiful monuments and all that represents would be treasured as such!!!

To those of us who propose to remove the Columbus statue here and across this country should dig deep and ask themselves where they would be if Columbus wasn’t the man he was. His lack of fear ultimately gave this group their voice. They should be proud of this voyager. The Mayor and committee need to stand firm and righteous in this matter, not cave to whims of a select few voices.

My dad told me the story of the statue. He was a young boy when the statue was put up and was always very proud of it.

Living in Syracuse many, many years ago and having family live there, I always loved Clounmbus Circle and the statue. I am proud of the many Italian friends I have and like that they love the statue and their heritage.

My Italian family have have been here in Syracuse NY since the 1800,'s. The statue of Christopher Columbus belongs to our families that worked hard in Syracuse and brought their trades from Italy and helped build Syracuse. They went through a lot to come hear and put up a lot from others. Our ancestors worked hard and paid for that statue in times that money was tough we own the statue it deserves to stay right where it is in memory of our families that came and sacrificed to be here in America.

Italian Americans, unite around a figure that is more deserving and representative of the Italian spirit than the conqueror, enslaver, and ruthless tool of the Spanish crown Cristobal Colon. The Italians who donated to the building of ALL the Columbus statues around the country were duped by the revision and rewriting of Columbus's voyage. There is nothing in ANY of Columbus's voyages to be proud of, including the one where he was put into chains for the return to Spain. Galileo, Machiavelli, Marconi. They are GREAT Italians to be proud of. Italian, English, French, or Spanish explorers ALL have a history of plunder, theft, enslavement, oppression, and destroying the cultures of the very people they were proselytizing in the name of Christ. The Columbus statues across America were built out of ignorance for the REAL history of Columbus. These statues have come to symbolize the oppression and ruthlessness of our world 500 years ago. Time for Italian-Americans to face the facts and distance themselves from the conqueror Christopher Columbus. Like most of the Confederate statues that are coming down across the country, the Columbus statues were erected at the end of the 19th century into the early part of the 20th century. Their meaning is totally lost and has become a symbol of hate. Columbus WAS a hateful person. Find an Italian that symbolizes strength and love to exalt. Not a 2-bit sailor in the employ of the Spanish Inquisition who accidentally landed in North America (never even touching land in what is now the United States.). ALL STATUES OF COLUMBUS MUST GO. SYMBOLS OF HATE HAVE NO PLACE IN TODAY'S AMERICA!!!
