Contemporary Bartolomé de las Casas condemned other Spanish involved in colonization of the Americas, but notably not Columbus.

It is sad that people are holding yesterday’s heroes to today’s standards.

Columbus was arrested after his 4th voyage for saving over 200 jews from the Inquisition by bringing them here. Establishing trade relations for them with friendly native americans. The result was Costa Rica. Anti -semites were enraged and the wrote Anti Columbus falsehoods. Chris was a member of the same Secular Franciscan Society as St Joan D'Arc & St Thomas More.

Too many lies out there about this great man. Learn the truth. He was blamed for what many others did.

Keep the statue! My mother and 4 grandparents came here to live a good life - because they WANTED to be here. I am as proud of Columbus as they were. If his statue falls, America may fall.

Our Columbus statue was privately funded. If someone wants a group to be represented, they can build their own statue. Noone has a right to tear down our history. FYI: North Africans were enslaving white Europeans.....including Italians before Columbus ever sailed to the Americas. See link below: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_slavery

To me, an Italian-American, I can say that the statue of Christopher Columbus means many things to me and my family. We believe that Columbus inspired many Italian citizens to take a chance in life and move to America in order for a better life. This is true for my own family as my Grandfather came to this country in 1965 to help give his family a better life. This not only applied to Italians but also all people from other countries. America is the land of opportunity and has been since it fought for it’s own freedom in the revolutionary war. To tear down this statue would not only be a blow to Italian-Americans, but also any person in the United States who came here for a better opportunity. -The Bertone Family
