Background

This petition has been established by Councillor Mike Brindle. It calls upon Norfolk County Council to keep Priorsmead Care Home open. The home at Canterbury Way, Thetford, has been placed under review by Norse Care - a care company set up and owned by Norfolk County Council. An eight-week consultation began late in August. Residents have been told that if the proposal to close the home goes ahead they could remain living in the area close to family and friends. However it is understood that no specific promises have been made because it depends what places are available nearby at the point when it may close. Priorsmead closes. Just recently a national report revealed that in excess of 71,000 new care home places are needed to cope with the population growing older – so it seems particularly ill-advised to close down a care home rated as “good” recently. We call upon Norfolk County Council to thoroughly review the the feasibility of keeping Priorsmead open and consider all options. Should closure go ahead, thought must be given to the future use of the site - we do not want a Cottage Hospital #2!

This petition will be presented to Norfolk County Council by Mike Brindle following the closure of the official consultation conducted by Norse Care. The personal details contained within will not be shared with any third party and will be stored securely to protect sensitive data.

Reaching one hundred signatures shows that many people value the stability this home provides to our community. This response encourages me to keep pressing for a thorough review of the plans currently in place.

The momentum behind this effort proves that our community recognizes the vital role Priorsmead plays in the lives of our residents. Watching this support grow confirms that the council must pause and reconsider their current path.

We are nearing a threshold that will help demonstrate the strength of our community concern to the council. Please send this link to a few people who live locally so we can reach this initial goal with a clear message.

I have worked in this home, it's really homely and comforting to clients, and it's size makes it more attractive. We need MORE of these smaller homes, as it has a family atmosphere, unlike larger ones.

My mum recently passed away, and was a resident of Priorsmead. She was well cared for by the staff there. It was a pleasure to walk into a care home, that didnt smell of urine, which some in Thetford do. We should be keeping Priorsmead open, with pride, at the service it provides.

This is an essential facility for the area's elderly, and if you look at the difficulties in getting good home care, you realise this all the more. The town is growing, as is it's elderly population. If anything we need more places like Priorsmead...certainly not less.

On all my visits to Priorsmead over the last 6 years (125 approx.) to visit friends and take Christian services, I've always been struck by the excellent care of the staff team and the resulting contentment of the residents. It would be a great shame if this much valued care home was closed down.

My dad is in Priorsmead, we moved him from London so he could be nearer to us and get more visits, I'm devastated that I'm having to move and unsettle him yet again, these are people's homes and carers jobs,

My wife has worked at Priorsmead for 27 years and feels that the closing of Priorsmead will be a huge loss to Thetford. Not to mention feeling that the staff have been kicked in the teeth (yet again) by Norse who put money before care.

I've always felt that the smaller size of Priorsmead means it has a valuable 'family feel'.
