Keep PowderPuff
We, the students, families, and concerned citizens of the McFarland community, are writing to express our strong support for keeping the beloved tradition of Powder Puff at our school. We firmly believe that Powder Puff is an inclusive event that provides a unique opportunity for individuals who cannot participate in high school football to experience the thrill of the game.
Powder Puff has always been an inclusive activity at our school. The fact that there is a signup sheet in the cafeteria for anyone interested in signing up as a player or coach clearly demonstrates its accessibility. This allows students from all backgrounds and abilities to come together and be part of something bigger than themselves.
Contrary to claims made by some, Powder Puff actually opposes gender roles rather than reinforcing them. It challenges traditional stereotypes associated with sports. This game promotes equality and empowers individuals regardless of their gender identity.
Furthermore, Powder Puff brings a sense of unity within each grade level as well as within our entire community. It serves as a bonding experience for students who may not have had the chance to interact closely before. Additionally, many students and families eagerly attend these games alongside other citizens from our village, fostering a strong connection between our school and community members.
The seniors were not able to experience homecoming and all the traditions their freshman year due to Covid-19, so taking away such a popular, and fun event during their last year of high school doesn't seem right.
We are not opposed to a kickball game as well, but powderpuff is a tradition, and every other school gets to do it as well, so it's not fair to us.
Students are also probably going to find a way to play this regardless, so having it be a school-sponsored event allows anyone the opportunity to sign up, and is safer since there would be adult supervision.
We kindly request your reconsideration of the decision to eliminate Powder Puff and instead work towards finding solutions that ensure its continuation. Let us embrace inclusivity, celebrate diversity, and keep this tradition alive.
