I have been a victim of sexual harassment myself in theatre. Not in this community, but while working at a Ren Faire in Upstate NY. It ruined what I had hoped would be a wonderful gig. The person was in the administration, so I felt powerless and that I couldn't do anything. It eventually stopped and I was not his only victim. Theatre should be safe, no matter where it is. We need to protect each other.

At least one valley theatre has turned a blind eye to this issue involving at least two staff members. I’m hoping this will light the issue and cause swift and lasting change.

I am so very sorry that this was your experience in our community. As the author of the petition I have never heard about this and had no idea this happened to you.
You are 100% correct that protections should extend and apply to ALL people regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation. It is the specific reason I left gender out of it. Again I am sad this was your experience.

I find it utterly hysterical that all of you are so up in arms and calling for action. I see lots of women, who are appalled that this thing has been going on in the theater community. I completely agree. But what about the young gay boy, who tried to speak out against a very powerful, influential director in the Valley, and just about ALL of you on this list silenced him? Where was your righteous indignation then?! You made excuses that the director was drunk, that this young man and the director are both too talented NOT to work together. So this young man was black listed, meanwhile that director is still very active - often with children in his programs. But I know none of you will ever speak out against him. Just consider this petition should cover ALL parties, not just those you find it convenient to listen to. Not just women, either.

These types of discussions MUST take place to prevent sexual misconduct. There is no situation that makes sexual harassment "okay" and there should be no tolerance of it, whatsoever. Choreography is essential in an intimate theater/acting atmosphere.

This has been a problemin our area for as long as I've been doing theatre. It can't go on any longer. It is 2021 and we are still dealing with this. We need the theaters' support so we can end this once and for all.
