The Problem(s)

We've all noticed construction vehicles barreling through our community with reckless abandon. It's a problem that has been addressed numerous times to the builder and has been met with halfhearted assurances that action will be taken. I'm fairly certain that everyone shares this concern.

The problem, however, is not just with construction vehicles. It's happening more and more frequently that visitors to our neighborhood---like the delivery trucks, contractors, and even residents themselves---are treating Goose Preserve Dr., like just one more freeway to speed through on their way home. There have been numerous close calls with a few of the smaller children in this area and something needs to be done to prevent those incidents from turning into tragedies.

A Little Background

For those unfamiliar with Goose Preserve Dr. (GPD), its the main drag that goes north from the roundabout through the single family homes and on to the new villas. Its the longest stretch of road in the community without a stop sign. It also happens to be the location of a fantastic sledding hill that also has a brand new playground sitting practically on the road. With all the kids crossing the street at this particular location... it's a recipe for trouble.

And while the problems on GPD led to the initiation of this petition, they are not isolated to any one specific road. Julia, Polen Farm, the Round-a-Bout-of-Doom... all are problem areas, and all will need a solution.

What Can We Do?

Sign this petition to allow us to persuade Loudoun County into conducting a traffic study and create a "traffic calming plan." We're starting this petition for the purpose of spreading the word early and determining what level of support we can garner from the community.

Next Steps

  • Confirm initiation of traffic study to be conducted by Loudoun County Department of Transportation & Capital Infrastructure (DTCI)
  • Attend stakeholder meeting with DTCI
  • Sign official petition required by DTCI (75% of community must sign to proceed)
  • Stay engaged in the process

Additional Information

If you'd like to take a more active role in the process---or simply have thoughts you'd like to share---feel free to respond on Facebook and a member of the Preserve at Goose Creek Traffic Improvement Committee (PaGCTIC) will get back to you. (Ok... so that committee and the accompanying acronym are not really a thing... but anyone interested in pushing this through is welcome to participate in any capacity.)

Seeing this grow has been exhausting but it proves I am not the only one scared for our kids. We have enough attention now that they might finally have to stop ignoring us. I am tired of the runaround but this energy keeps me moving forward.

Signed. From my perspective and personal observations the largest group of speeders are the residents themselves. -Len

Potomac Trail Circle and Julia St are two other speedways in the community - the slope of Julia going down is very dangerous for speeding vehicles and the turn into Potomac Trail by drivers with speeding vehicles is crazy. We need to protect our community and its children. I have 2 boys and I am always concerned when they are going to or coming back from school.

We live facing Sugarview Sugarview is often used as a speedway at all hours. Also stop signs turning onto Sugarview from Rosalind are often ignored. Perhaps making the intersection at Rosalind and Sugarview a 4-way stop would help slow cars down. With the new tot lot in place, it is especially scary how fast the cars move through the area.

Do we need to wait for a horrific event before common sense changes are made? Children are in danger every day because of dozens of speeding vehicles on residential streets. Speed bumps are needed to deter construction vehicles and other drivers from making poor decisions.

Julia Street and the roundabout is an accident waiting to happen. Kids cross over for community center .... cars from Van Metre community - delivery trucks speed through at over 50 mph..... We live on the corner of Julia street and see it happen so frequently that we are scared of these cars losing control trying to avoid an accident and ramming into one of the houses that border Julia....

Save our children and do the right thing by taking some control and accountability of this serious situation. We've already had neighborhood animals killed. We certainly don't want this to escalate.
