LIFE and health is defined, promoted and maintained by very complex relationships that include the myriad of symbiotic things found only in soil.

Organic growing is about growing in, and bettering, our soil. Not hydroponics, which lacks 'goodness' that only the soil can give

This principle is fundamental to the integrity of organic farming and growing. Without this consumer trust is eroded and organic becomes meaningless.

The allowance of hydroponic and predominantly liquid fed systems of production to be certified by the NOP is out of line with global thinking on this issue. By doing so you threaten the trust and integrity of all who have gone before and laboured with love over building and rejuvenating soil fertility. Shame on you NOP and USDA.

Production without soil can not be done without artificial fertilizers so it can never be like Organic

Organic agriculture is all about feeding the diverse soil organisms that cycle essential nutrients and minerals from bedrock to plants through the activity of a healthy soil food web. Hydroponic may be a fine way to grow things and may well be deserving of a set of high standards and a label but hydroponic has nothing to do with soil or soil life. As an American consumer I find it frustrating that I cannot even easily know if something has been grown hydroponically because it is not labeled. And I am infuriated to know that hydroponic fruits and vegetable are hiding behind a USDA organic label when they are banned from similar standards in other countries including the country of origin for many of the crops grown! Keep the SOIL in organic.
